It is then very rare

to meet duets or trios in fine art vocal, nearly songs being for solo voice and pianoforte.  Exceptionally, our Ukrainian composers have left us with more than twoscore.  In duets, together with the piano, there are iii individual voices; in the trios there are 4.

The compositions do not simply create harmony.  Each musical line has a life of its own, sometimes singing against each other, sometimes together.  Most importanly, each vocalism and piano line expresses an individual  feeling, sometimes in harmony, merely frequently in disharmonize.

This evening's salon presents a pot-pourri of ensembles by Mykola Lysenko and Jakiv Stepovyi.  Merely, nosotros accept also a solo, performed past each of our artists.

Artists in Performance: Ukrainian Art Song Summer Institute 2018

Join u.s.a., Baronial 19th, 3pm at the Imperial Solarium's Temerty Theatre, for a delightful afternoon of Ukrainian Art Songs featuring N American participants from this yr's Ukrainian Art Song Summer Establish held at the Royal Solarium of Music. This is a rare opportunity to hear eight extraordinary rising stars as they interpret the works of Ukrainian composers such equally Ostap and Nestor Nyzhankivsky, Myroslav Volynsky, and Jaroslav Lopatynsky, accompanied by collaborative pianists Albert Krywolt and Robert Kortgaard. Host and Creative Director, the internationally renowned bass-baritone, Pavlo Hunka will provide lively and insightful commentary.

The featured artists include Douglas Graham (baritone), Julie Gulenko (soprano), Kateryna Khartova (soprano), Ariane Meredith (mezzo-soprano), Andrew Skitko (tenor), Olenka Slywynska (soprano), Oleksandra Verzole (soprano) and Allison Walmsley (soprano).

At this concert, the UASP volition launch the much awaited Galicians II recording of a further 82 Ukrainian fine art songs. The UASP has at present reached all the same some other milestone; of the i,000 art songs, a total of 388 take now been recorded and published.

The Ukrainian Art Song Summertime Establish  2018 will take place Baronial 13-nineteen at Toronto's Imperial Solarium of Music.

Summertime Institute Participants

Allison Walmsley is a Toronto-based soprano acclaimed for her "all-encompassing upper register and resonate bottom" and is known to be a "natural and alluring actress" -Ludwig van Toronto. Hailing from Saskatoon, SK, Allison is thrilled to be participating in the Ukrainian Art Song Summer Establish. She completed her Bachelor's degree in vocalisation performance at the U of S with Dr. Garry Gable and Kathleen Lohrenz Gable. Allison received her Primary's Caste in Vox Performance at Western University, nether soprano Jackalyn Brusk, with whom she continues to study. Allison is a frequent participator in competitions and festivals including Gordon Wallis Opera competition (commencement place), the CFMTA Young Artist competition (First Place), Saskatoon Music Festival (Kinsmen laurels) and the Toronto Mozart Competition (finalist). Some operatic role highlights include Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute), Morgana in (Alcina), Nanetta (Falstaff), True cat in Saskatoon Opera'due south (The Bremen Boondocks Musicians) and Emily in (Our Town). She most recently premiered ii Canadian works in June with VCO: Kate in (The Covenant) and Luna in Padajuča Zvijezda. In July, she sang Adina in Elixir of Love with OBR. She looks frontwards to  performing Handel's Messiah in December with the SSO.

Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, Douglas Graham is an emerging baritone, currently completing his Master's of Music Functioning in vox at the Academy of Western Ontario, under the tutelage of Ted Baerg. Not coming from a Ukrainian background or heritage, Douglas was introduced offset to Ukrainian choral music from choir director Dr. Melanie Turgeon during his undergrad at The Male monarch's University. A masterclass and concert from Pavlo Hunka further piqued his interest in Ukrainian art song and beyond. When he isn't performing on stage you lot can find him exploring the Canadian wilderness and capturing those moments on motion-picture show.

Julie Anna Gulenko is praised for her graceful soprano vox and sensitive musical interpretations. The northeast Ohio native is an alumna of Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Marlene Rosen and performed in several Oberlin Opera Theater productions. ClevelandClassical.com noted the vocalist'due south delightful arroyo to the office of Serpetta in Oberlin'southward modern staging of La finta giardiniera past Mozart. Ms. Gulenko has made multiple appearances with both County Comic Opera and the Summit Choral Society, and has recently collaborated on operation projects with the Cleveland Ballet, the Western Reserve Historical Order, and the Tuesday Musical Association. The young artist has participated in primary classes with Serbian mezzo-soprano Milena Kitic and Venezuelan soprano Inés Salazar.

Kateryna (Katya) Khartova had moved to Canada from Ukraine in 2007 at the age of 18. During her first year in Saskatoon she started taking voice lessons and immediately roughshod in love with opera. In 2011 Katya was accustomed into the Music Section at the University of Saskatchewan where she has been studying under the tutelage of Dr. Garry Gable and Kathleen Lohrenz Gable. In 2016 Khartova has graduated with a Music Bachelor Honours in Voice Performance. During her school years Katya has been a chorus member of the numerous opera productions with the Saskatoon Opera Clan and was three times accepted to the Opera NUOVA ten Solar day (2014, 2015) and the Six Weeks Intensive (2017) Summer Programs. She has won the Wallis Silver Memorial (2014) and Statuary Grand Awards (2015) at the Saskatchewan Music Festival. In March of 2017 year Kateryna Khartova had her orchestral debut with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra equally a soprano soloist for the Ukrainian oratorio 'Aureate Harvest' past Larysa Kuzmenko. She is now continuing her education at the Glenn Gould Schoolhouse of Music in Toronto in the class of Monica Whicher.

OLEKSANDRA VERZOLE is an emerging soprano and contempo graduate of the University of North Carolina Greensboro with a master's caste in Voice Performance. She has performed in recent productions equally Pamina The Magic Flute and Lucy The Telephone. She has participated in masterclasses with world renowned artists Shari Gruber and Sherrill Milnes. With Ukrainian equally her background, Ukrainian choral and vocal music is dear to her heart. Oleksandra is very excited to be joining the Ukrainian Art Vocal Project for a second yr.

Olenka Slywynska has been praised with having "a lush, love-coloured sound filling the hall, singing everyone else under the tabular array" (Opera Canada). Ms. Slywynska performs in opera, oratorio and does recital work. She has enjoyed interesting recital opportunities at the Tanglewood Music Festival, Hamilton Philhamonic's What'south Next festival, and ARC festivals. Olenka has performed oratorio with the Hamilton Combo Symphony, Toronto Classical Singers, Vesnivka and many others. Ms. Slywynska has enjoyed singing in operas with the Highlands Opera Studio, Opera Chai and operas at the Glenn Gould School of Music. She has also sung in the Canadian Opera Company Chorus. Olenka has recently earned a Masters in Didactics from the University of Toronto and is presently educational activity phonation.

Mezzo Soprano Ariane Meredith, Nova Scotia native, is a recent graduate from the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University. An ardent interpreter of vocal, she is excited to join the Ukrainian Art Vocal Summer Institute for a second flavor. While beingness a performer of opera and song, she is peculiarly passionate nearly sharing Eastern European repertoire. Highlights include a solo recital featuring Ukrainian and Russian song, the function of La Ciesca in Puccini'southward Gianni Schicchi, and an advent alongside Canadian tenor Benjamin Butterfield and Hungarian-Canadian mezzo soprano Krisztina Szabó in Janáček'southward The Diary of One Who Disappeared.

Andrew Skitko earned his bachelor'southward and master'due south degrees at Westminster Choir College. Through Westminster, he performed with the world's leading conductors and orchestras at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Skitko sings with the Opera Philadelphia Chorus, The Philadelphia Symphonic Choir, The Same Stream Choir, and participated in The Oxford University Choral Plant equally a member of The Williamson Voices. He is a cantor for the Byzantine-Ruthenian Church, and also the artistic director of Theoria Chamber Choir, which performs Slavic choral repertoire.

Andrea Ludwig, Mezzo Soprano

Andrea Ludwig, Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Juno-nominated and Dora laurels winning mezzo soprano, Andrea Ludwig, is an artist of depth and versatility. Hailed past Robert Harris of the Globe and Mail as a "tremendous tour de force of powerful vocalization" she has performed numerous roles with the Canadian Opera Company, equally well every bit Edmonton Opera, Tapestry Opera, Philadelphia Opera, San Francisco Opera, Canadian Stage, Vancouver Opera and the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. Laura McAlpine, Mezzo Soprano

Laura McAlpine, Winnipeg born mezzo soprano, has been acclaimed for her "mellifluous singing and flashes of wit" (Opera Canada), an "impressive voice that jumps off the stage" (Classical96.3 FM), an "expressive vocalization with fine artistic sensibility" (Whole Note Mag), and praises similar, "the stand up out was Laura McAlpine's Jenny; varying way and technique appropriately." (Opera Ramblings).

Chamber and concert performances include, North American premiere of Krystof Maratka's VABENI, at TSO'south New Creations Festival, with conductor Peter Oundjian, and world premiere of Christopher Mayo'due south Under Night Water, at the 21C Music Festival with Esprit Orchestra, and Alex Pauk. Laura sang with Victoria Symphony Orchestra, with conductor Alain Trudel, was the alto soloist in Messiah, with the Elmer Iseler Singers, Amadeus Choir, and Lydia Adams, and virtually recently the alto soloist for The Cellar Singers concerts of Handel's Messiah, and Rossini'south Petite Messe Solennelle with conductor Mitchell Pady.

Chamber works include, Spirit Dreaming (Maurice Ravel's Chanson madécasses, Peter Sculthorpe'due south Island Dreaming, and Tanu by John Beckwith), with Talisker Players, and music of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, in remounts of Laura Jones/Talisker Players shows, Anything Goes and Puttin' on the Ritz. Laura self-produced A Poet's Love, a 2-act staged recital, and recording of the Dichterliebe vocal cycles by Robert Schumann, and Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko, with pianist David Eliakis, available on iTunes.

In opera, Laura's roles include Sesto in La clemenza di Tito, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutté, Madame Flora in The Medium, Charlotte in Werther, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos, Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus, Siebel in Faust. New opera roles include Sarinder in Factory Theatre'due south production of Savitri and Sam, Aunt Luce Gertrude for Opera in Concert'due south premiere bedchamber version of Charles Wilson's Kamouraska, and created the function of Caterpillar/Butterfly for Opera NUOVA in the premiere performance of Isaiah Bell's children'due south opera, The Lives of Lesser Things.

Andrew is the creative director of Theoria Chamber Choir, which performs Slavic choral repertoire.

Robert Kortgaard, Pianist

Robert Kortgaard was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. He completed his Bachelor and Chief's degrees at the Juilliard School in New York Urban center.  As a recipient of arts awards from the Canada Council, he furthered his musical studies in Italia and England.

He has performed as a soloist with major Canadian orchestras and has given recitals throughout Canada and the U.s., likewise as in England, Finland, Portugal, Italia, Indonesia, the Czech Commonwealth, Red china and Nippon. Mr. Kortgaard is Artistic Director of the Indian River Festival on Prince Edward Island and the Leith Summer Music Festival in Ontario. He was musician-in-residence at the Academy of New Brunswick from l993-l998, and has given piano masterclasses at Universities and festivals in Canada, Indonesia and Red china and served equally an adjudicator at many national music competitions. He is also a faculty member for the Ukrainian Art Song Summer Institute (2017 & 2018) held at the Majestic Conservatory of Music. Mr. Kortgaard has performed with sopranos Isabel Bayrakdarian, Sumi Jo, Jane Archibald, Adrianne Pieczonka and Erin Wall, mezzo soprano Susan Platts, violinist Joshua Bell, and with prima ballerina Veronica Tennant on a production entitled "Invitation to the Dance". He has recorded French and German Cabaret programmes with mezzo-soprano Jean Stilwell for CBC Records. His CD with soprano Wendy Nielsen was nominated for both Juno and East Declension Music Awards. Mr. Kortgaard tours with flutist Susan Hoeppner, cabaret artist Patricia O'Callaghan, baritone Brett Polegato, mezzo soprano Julie Nesrallah, renowned music theatre actress/singer Rebecca Caine and with piano duo partner Peter Tiefenbach. A CD of the music of Olivier Messiaen, recorded with soprano Suzie LeBlanc, was released on the ATMA Classiques label and has received an Opus Laurels for best recording of 20th century music.
